Transcript of The Theme of Love in The Development of the Theme of Love in Winston's Experiences Because of the world that he is living in, Winston had not had experience being in a loving and intimate relationship with anyone in the past.

He was previously married to a woman named Katherine, who was more or less just simply pawn for the Party, and incapable of giving Winston the relationship he desired. Winston describes her as "the most stupid, vulgar, empty mind that he had ever encountered" She was completely and utterly devoted to the Party, and the couple split after fifteen months of miserable marriage. Winston even admits to Julia that he felt temptation to murder Katharine when the pair got lost on a nature hike.

Winston also admits in his journal to having sex with a prole prostitute - Love and sexuality theme in 1984 act prohibited by the Party. This and his sessions of trying to have a child with Katherine for the party is the only intimacy he's felt- which is very lonesome.

With Julia When Winston meets Julia, this is where everything seems to begin to change. She is young, beautiful and clever.

And - to add to it - she hates the Party.

The two immediately hit it off and share a very passionate affair. When it begins, it comes across as simply a lustful relationship. However, as time progresses, Winston quickly falls in love with Julia, and vice versa. When Julia squeezes his hand as a gesture of affection rather than desire, Winston felt "a deep tenderness, such as he had not felt for her before, suddenly took hold of him.
